Making a Custom Indiana Jones Hat

Updated: Jan 29

In Virginia City, there is a hat maker who has been crafting custom hats for many years. The hats are of very high quality, made from Beaver felts, which are recognized in the industry as the best.Essentially, they are waterproof. Below are some photos and videos of the process of making my hat which I refer to as an Indiana Jones style.Almost every hat (excluding baseball hats) is shaped from this Shell—Fedora, Derby, Cowboy hats, and yes, the Indiana Jones hat. They begin soft and pliable.

Following a personalized measurement of the individual's head, he designs a unique stamp to be positioned on the headband, which I refer to as the inside of the hat. This stamp will include the percentage of Beaver, my name, and the date it was created.

Pascal is embossing the letters onto the headband, which contain my name, date, and the percentage of Beaver.

Pascal utilizes some of the finest hat-making equipment that is a century old. He is preparing to stretch the hat before shaping it.

The steam he applies enhances the material's ability to be shaped, and once the moisture from the steam evaporates, the hat solidifies.

After we decided on the brim size, which was 3". Pascal cut the excess material off

Pascal is hand forming the hat to add the curves tilt and style

He paid great attention to detail when making the fine adjustments to this hat

My hat fits perfectly, but I forgot to take a picture of myself wearing it once he finished. This truly historic and amazing place is called Pioneer Emporium & Virginia Hat Maker.Feel free to ask if you have any questions.Steve
